by Ben Virgo
John 10v1-13 At the beginning of his talk, Ben talked about the Catholic Church, and how important the Reformation was with Martin Luther King in order to set the Church straight that salvation comes wholly by faith, and not by any other means. He then went on to speak about the charismatic renewal of the 70’s, and how battles had to be fought to help people to see that the gifts of the spirit are for us to use today. However, though each of these conflicts needed to take place it’s possible that we could continue unnecessarily fighting them well after the battle has actually been won. – And this can result in us having a go at Catholics, or emphasising that the gifts of the Spirit are for today, when actually there is now widespread recognition of this. What we need to do is to find out what our battle is for today – what God wants us to do in the here and now.
Types of people: Ascetics – These people have the opinion that, if it hurts it’s probably what God’s wanting us to do. If it’s good, and we enjoy it, it’s probably sinful. This can result in Christians feeling guilty about not doing what God wants them to do because they’re not constantly in torment. 1. Why do you think so many Christians tend to view God’s plan for them in this way? 2. What is wrong with this train of thought?
Form - We can be interested in the form that our relationship with God takes (its outward appearances), rather that the relationship itself. – Which can result in us feeling that to be a ‘proper’ Christian we need to be ‘full time’. And can result in us trying to emulate others rather than be the person God’s called us to be. 3. Why do many Christians tend to fall into this category? 4. In 1Cor 11v1 Paul says ‘Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ’ – how do we reconcile this with we’ve just been talking about?
In Jn 10v10 Jesus says ‘I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full’
5. What does this say about how our relationship with God should be? 6. Why isn’t it always like this? 7. What should we do to make it more like this?
